"When are you speaking to Haim?" a message arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only a single issue: The author likewise wants to be Haim's fourth member. Furthermore, we are not alone. Several high-profile fans have openly begged for the position.

The evidence suggests something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit unit. Their videos often depict them walking in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such unfettered exuberance you inevitably think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that fans approached us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That is the greatest honour. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire people to start a band."

"So all is invited to be the honorary Haim sister."

Historic Nod

The trio have called into a break, where they're resting up after an major tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in the running for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the honor isn't lost on the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major achievement," continues Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the female artists that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The album came out of a time of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that strange transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The words track endings and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them working out in real life who they want to be.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to make an effort in ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed resilience required a fresh approach – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The band's openness inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal tales.

One man left Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Legacy

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their place in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide audience.

Yet the sister act will consistently be their number one focus.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
